PLAN
Located on the banks of the Glenaddragh River outside of Kilcar is the Leitir Corn Mill which dates to the early 19th century. Up until May 1954, the mill catered for the corn growers of the parishes of Kilcar, Glencolmcille and Killybegs. Few of Ireland’s traditional corn mills have survived to the present day with the level of preservation and intactness of this 156-year-old mill and drying kiln.
The building is of immense cultural and industrial significance and in 2014 a local heritage committee was formed to develop a project to restore the mill into a working heritage water mill. When complete it will offer an insight into an important aspect of Donegal and the Northwest regions’ industrial and agricultural heritage in the 19th century. The mill has undergone significant restoration as part of a conservation project, which includes the rebuilding of its mill-wheel and internal machinery, as well as the development of a river walk and visitor facilities
There in now an added attraction of a Riverwalk of approx 1km, being developed, along the Glenadragh River. This includes, seating at various stages, picnic areas, native tree planting, wild flower areas and a pond.
Discover the captivating tale of Leitir Corn Mill with Michael Ward’s meticulously researched book, “The Life and Times of a Rural Corn Mill in Southwest Donegal.” Perfect for history enthusiasts and those passionate about rural heritage, this book offers a window into the past like never before.
