PLAN
Gleann Cholm Cille (Glencolmcille) is a Gaeltacht village celebrated for its deep routed tradition, remarkable archaeological significance and its rich cultural heritage.
It was here, the areas namesake Saint Columba (Colm Cille), sought refuge whilst it has also inspired figures such as poet Dylan Thomas, composer Arnold Bax and the artist Rockwell Kent. Even Bonnie Prince Charlie is reputed to have hidden out in the parish of Glencolmcille whilst on the run following his failed uprising in Scotland and his attempt to restore the Stuart monarchy.
In the heart of the village lies the internationally renowned Glencolmcille Folk Village, a living museum that transports its visitors back in time. Constructed as a ‘clachán’ or traditional Irish settlement, the village features meticulously recreated homes from the 18th to the 20th centuries. Each cottage is authentically furnished with period utensils, furniture and tools, providing a glimpse into daily life during these times.
Over the years, the Folk Park has been expanded to include a schoolhouse, a shebeen and craft shop with each addition adding to the immersive experience available today.
Today, the Folk Village offers an enriching experience for all ages and visitors can take guided tours and learn about the resilience and resourcefulness of the people of Donegal. After exploring, they can unwind in the traditional teahouse or browse the craft shop for local, handmade gifts and souvenirs. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a family looking for a fun day out, or someone seeking a deeper connection to Ireland’s past, the Glencolmcille Folk Village is a must-visit destination that beautifully captures the spirit of Donegal.
Founded in 1967 by Father James McDyer, the Folk Village stands as a testament to his dedication to revitalisng the community. Born in Glenties in 1910, Father McDyer was deeply moved by the heartbreak of emigration from the area, which saw countless families bid tearful farewells to loved ones. Determined to curb this exodus, he worked tirelessly to create opportunities and promote local culture, leaving a great legacy in Glencolmcille.
