Located in the heart of Letterkenny, Donegal County Museum is where you can explore the archaeology, history and culture of County Donegal. The Museum is based in an old stone building, which was once part of the Letterkenny Workhouse. It offers fascinating exhibits that bring the authentic stories of Donegal’s past to life. Throughout the year there are temporary exhibitions, talks, events and tours.
The Museum is a ‘Designated Museum’ under the National Cultural Institutions Act, 1997 and the National Monuments (Amendment) Act 1994. It is legally entitled to retain archaeological objects on behalf of the State. The National Museum of Ireland will only lend objects for display to Designated Museums. Curators of Designated Museums are empowered to act on behalf of the Director of the National Museum to ensure that objects are investigated, reported and preserved as State property.

Historic Exhibits: Explore a diverse collection of artifacts spanning from the Stone Age to modern times, including Bronze Age tools and military memorabilia.
Younger visitors can search for clues and discover more about the history of Donegal with the Museum Detectives backpack. This fun and educational backpack is free to borrow when you visit the Museum and contains a series of activities for children of all ages.
Free Admission: With no entry fee, the museum offers an affordable and enriching way to delve into Donegal’s unique history and culture.
